Ateneo nails first win sans-Madayag, sweeps UST to clinch F4 spot


The Ateneo De Manila University Lady Eagles made short work of the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses in Maddie Madayag’s first match out of the lineup, 25-20, 25-18, 25-18 in the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Ateneo had UST’s number right from the first point, overwhelming their foes at every facet. Ateneo dominated the blocking (8-2) and serving department (7-2) while limiting their errors to just 22.

Ateneo’s open hitters, Alyssa Valdez and Jhoana Maraguinot, dished out 14 points apiece, while Amy Ahomiro, who took over Madayag’s spot on the starting six, managed 10 markers.

“We’re really happy with how we played pero marami pa ring errors. We really need to work on those pa,” said Valdez.

Cherry Rondina was the only Tigress in double-digits with 11 points. Skipper Ej Laure managed just nine markers.

Ateneo improve to 9-2, first in the league and good for their seventh consecutive Final Four appearance. UST are left in the middle of the pack fighting for their lives at 5-6.

Ateneo take on the Adamson University Lady Falcons on April 2 at the SM MoA Arena. UST face the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws on March 30 at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
