Tigers wallop wasteful Warriors for third triumph

The University of Santo Tomas Tigers needed less than hour to destroy the University of the East Warriors in straight sets 25-13, 25-15, 25-11 to start the second round of the UAAP Men’s Volleyball Tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

UST rushed to double-digit leads in each of the third set. At one point, UE gave up multiple errors that gave UST a 20-3 lead in the third set.

The Tigers not only outclassed the Warriors in every scoring skill, but did marvelously in limiting their errors to 18 while UE had 33.

Tigers’ head coach Odjie Mamon, however, was not too pleased with how his team played. He cited the team’s seemingly overconfident play as a red flag for future matches.

“Ang akin lang namin is respetuhin lahat ng kalaban,” he said. “They went into the match thinking na panalo na. The problem was the execution. We need play better than this moving forward,” he added, quipping that UE did most of the scoring for them.

Veteran middle blocker, Jason Sarabia had his third consecutive great game, registering a game-high 13 points built in nine attacks, three blocks, and an ace. Rookies Jomaru Amagan and Manuel Medina pitched in nine and seven points, respectively.

UE team captain, Edward Camposano recorded nine points while Noel Alba pitched in five markers.

The Tigers improve to 3-5 with a match against league-leading Adamson University Falcons (6-1) next on Saturday, 10 a.m. at the FilOil Flying V Centre. Still winless in eight matches, the Warriors try to bounce back against the National University Bulldogs (4-3) on Wednesday, 8 a.m. at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
