Rosia upsets Trongco to cop WBC International Flyweight belt

Renz Rosia downed the heavily favored Renan Trongco – scoring a technical knockout in the tenth round to become the new WBC International Flyweight champion in the Elorde Intenational Promotion’s “Night of Champions” triple main event at the Elorde Sports Complex Ballroom, Paranaque City, Saturday night.

The 27-year old southpaw banked on his speed and accuracy to prevent the hard-hitting Trongco from firing his usual punches. He broke away late in fifth round but was momentarily slowed down after referee Bruce McTarvish’s untimely separation of both men during the ten second warning. In addition, Rosia absorbed a point deduction for accumulated of low blows, to the dismay of his corner.

Rosia’s spirit, however, was revitalized after hearing that he still maintained the lead in the judges’ scorecards at the start of round nine. Raining punches to the frustrated “Little Pacquiao”, Rosia opened a cut above Trongco’s right eyelid and continued to punish the already bloodied Trongco in the following round, forcing ringside doctors to stop the bout at 1:51 mark.

“Nakita ko po sa kanya na nung mga 9th round na medyo nanghihina na siya. Pinush ko na sarili ko na i-todo ko na para makuha na namin (yung championship),” a jubilant Rosia told Tiebreaker Times after winning the title. “Sobrang saya nung inistop na nung referee yung laban kasi alam ko naman po na hindi (galling sa) headbutt po yung cut. Alam ko pong suntok talaga yung tumama. Masayang masaya po ako. Naramdaman ko po na panalo na talaga ako.”

Rosia improves his record to 12-3 with 6 knockouts and joins Bernabe Concepcion and Jestoni Audita to as the third Arci Boxing Stable fighter to win a title this year. Trongco, on the other hand, had his win streak snapped at 5.

In the other main events, Filipino pugilists were crowned as Jheritz Chavez and Romel Oliveros came out on top against their respective opponents to win the WBC Eurasia Pacific Boxing Council (EPBC) lightweight and superflyweight titles respectively.

Jheritz Chavez edged a resilient Tatsuya Yanagi, who still managed to put up a fight despite a bloodied nose, via unanimous decision, 115-113, 116-112, 116-113; while Oliveros squeezed past journeyman Edison Berwela, winning 96-94 on all scorecards.

The card was promoted by Gabriel S. Elorde Jr. of Elorde International Productions.
