Joshua Munzon, new-look Westports Malaysia escape Formosa

It looks like Joshua Munzon finally has the help he needs

Westports’ new reinforcements immediately brought impact as they helped the Malaysia Dragons escape the cluches of a tired yet tough Formosa Dreamers in overtime, 95-92, Sunday evening at the Changhua Stadium in Taiwan.

The Dragons have finally put an end to their six-game slump to improve to 4-10, while the Dreamers’ nightmare continued as they have gone 1-15. They could’ve redeemed themselves after losing to Hong Kong Eastern a day before.

Munzon continued his stellar play with 29 points, nine rebounds, and four steals, but the day belonged to Chris Eversley — the man who brought Westports to the ABL Finals back in 2014 — as he collected 38 points and 15 rebounds.

Eversley scored nine of his team’s 11 points in overtime to help Westports create separation from the Dreamers en route to the needed victory.

New addition, Filipino-American Jawhar Purdy, filled the stat sheet with seven markers, six assists, and four boards.

Bryan Davis, who replaced AJ West as the Dragons’ slotman, also finished with a double-double of 15 points and 11 boards.

Formosa’s loss wasted import Cameron Forte’s Herculean effort as he tallied 42 points, 25 rebounds, and five assists with two steals and a block. Yu Han Chen and Kenneth Chien were his only support as they scored 19 and 12, respectively.

The towering Ronnie Aguilar, who dealt the defending champions problems last Saturday due to his presence, was limited to just seven points and eight rebounds — a far cry from the 20-point, 13-board outing he had against Hong Kong.
