UE, UST sustain momentum from last season to open UAAP campaign

[nextpage title = “Day 1 Round-up”]
Men’s Taekwondo teams from seven universities started their campaign in this year’s UAAP tourney last Tuesday, October 13 at the Blue Eagle Gym. This year, Ateneo De Manila University hosted the event.

First in the mats were the defending champions, the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Jins, who despite losing former MVP Paul Romero, dominated their games against ADMU and FEU, 5-2, 6-2, respectively. It was a reflection that the Golden Jins is still the team to beat this season despite losing former MVP Paul Romero. Asked to make a comment on this, UST’s Assistant coach, Jasmin Simpao explained that it’s not as easy as what other people think. “I guess because we are the defending team but there are also other teams na malakas like UE.” She added, “This year kasi it is more competitive because it’s more of a head to head fight, everything boils down to court performance.”

UE, last year’s bridesmaid finisher also managed to rule the court as they beat DLSU with a score of 6-1. They continued their winning streak and grabbed another victory against FEU, 5-2. The NU Bulldogs, who snatched the third place last season, split their win-loss record in the tourney. They struggled in their battle against the Taft-based squad and left them with a score of 1-6. However, they bounced back against a nail biter match with UP, 4-3. The Diliman-based wasn’t able to recover and lost to ADMU. 3-4.

Although it was just the first day of the competition, everyone is already ecstatic with the results of the match ups. UST and UE both topped the rankings with a 2-0 win loss record. Following them are DLSU, NU, and ADMU, 1-1. Unfortunately, UP and FEU dropped with a 0-2 win-loss record at the end of the day.

Watch out for more forceful fights between the Taekwondo teams as they compete in the second day of the tournament on Thursday, October 15 at the Blue Eagle Gym.
