The work put in the Taekwondo program of the National University has come a long way. NU, coming from last year’s disappointing 7th place finish, has their sights set at a podium finish for this season. Backed-up by players running the taekwondo circuit, a rejuvenated NU Men’s taekwondo team blasted the Ateneo Blue Jins in a 5-2 win.
In a sign of things to come for the Blue Jins, Justin de Leon, cutting down to the Finweight Division for ADMU, incurred 8 kyonggos in an Alfred Avila win. Diether Baylon kicked his way to an early 8-1 lead over Radley Dizon in routing Dizon to a 13-4 win. Jefferson Piopongco would be down 4-1 against Aydin Cortez before the two blitzed their way in a fiery 2nd round. Cortez squeaked out a win 19-18 after connecting on two body kicks before the match ended. ADMU featherweight Marc Frigillana would also squeak out a victory over Aljon Ortonio with a razor thin margin, 9-8. With the series tied 2-all, Dave Cea and Arven Alcantara defeated brothers Joel and Jeff Alejandro, the latter in a blow-out 15-3, to seal the series in favor of the Bulldogs.
