UAAP 86 HSBVB: UST’s Progella-Villaluz dominates elims with six-match sweep


Defending champion University of Santo Tomas completed a six-match sweep of the eliminations in the UAAP Season 86 high school girls beach volleyball tournament at the Sands SM By The Bay Friday.

Khy Progella, Cameron Grace Villaluz and third player Grithney Jhyn Dadang made quick work of Ateneo’s Ten Quimpo, Abigail May Martija and third player Reggie Isabel Sanchez, 21-9, 21-10.

Adamson University finished No. 2 with a 5-1 record, as Shai Nitura and Fel Sagaysay topped National University Nazareth School’s Vilmarie Toos and Laiza Benigay, 21-16, 21-14.

Far Eastern University-Diliman’s Love Lopez, Sheena Cafe, and third player Frenchie Premaylon and Love Lopez prevailed over De La Salle-Zobel’s Aislinn Alemaña, Angel Jaden Cenizal and third player Katarina Tria, 21-7, 21-11, to secure the No. 3 ranking with a 4-2 slate.

The knockout Final Four takes place on Saturday afternoon.

The top-ranked Junior Tiger Sands will play the Bullpups, who ended up fourth in the eliminations at 3-3, at 4:00 PM.

The Baby Falcons will then go up against the Baby Tamaraws in the other Final Four pairing at 4:45 PM.

UST and Adamson are gunning for their second straight stint in the one-match Final set on Sunday.

After reaching the podium last season, the Junior Lady Spikers, with a 2-4 mark, will miss the Final Four.

The Blue Eagles logged a 1-5 card in sixth spot, while the Junior Fighting Maroons wound up last at 0-6.

In the boys division, UST and NUNS finished 1-2 in the elims after besting Adamson and FEU-D respectively.

The Junior Tiger Sands wrapped up their campaign with six straight victories after an opening-day loss.

John Michael Lagaran, Lance Malinao, and third player Luther Mace Gutierrez downed the Baby Falcons’ Tommy Castrodes, CJ Dominquito, and third player Brandy Clemente, 21-17, 21-11.

They later secured the No. 1 ranking by virtue of a superior scores ratio tiebreaker against their counterparts from Bustillos.

John Wayne Dionela and Rain Skyler Gemarino of the Bullpups also ended up at 6-1 after nipping Kyle Tandoc and Amet Bituin, 21-18, 22-20.

The boys Final Four pits UST and FEU-D at 5:30 PM on Saturday and NUNS and Adamson at 6:15 PM.

The Baby Falcons and the Baby Tamaraws capped the elims sharing third and fourth spots with similar 5-2 records and 12 points. Adamson had a better scores ratio tiebreaker over back-to-back title-seeking FEU-D.

University of the East’s Jan Macam, Xyrone Montemayor, and Ahril Cuadra ended a three-match losing streak after tripping Ateneo’s Mon Paquito Berdos Santiago Andres Avila and Miguel Mariano Turqueza, 21-7, 21-10.

De La Salle-Zobel’s Mario Roxas and Christopher Pallega pounded out a 21-12, 21-18 victory over UPIS’ Juan Miguel Navarro, and Marcus Ellis Bamba.

The Junior Green Spikers have a 2-5 slate in sixth and the Blue Eagles (1-6) and the Junior Fighting Maroons (0-7) round out the boys’ standings.
