Yeng Guiao to steer Gilas’ ship in World Cup Qualifiers second round

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio said that they have appointed coach Yeng Guiao to man Gilas Pilipinas’ sidelines in the second round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers this September.

Guiao will be temporarily taking the place of Gilas head coach Chot Reyes, who was slapped with a one-game ban by the international basketball federation for the Philippine team’s brawl with Australia in the third window.

“We’re happy to announce that we’re appointing coach Yeng to coach the Gilas team for the next window of the FIBA qualifiers,” said Panlilio in a short video clip posted by Waylon Galvez of Manila Bulletin on Twitter.

The NLEX Road Warriors head coach, who is currently with Gilas in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, will be coaching the national team versus Iran in Tehran on September 13 and against Qatar on September 17.

Gilas’ game versus the Qataris will be here in Manila and will be held behind closed doors – the Philippines has been put by FIBA under probation for the ugly incident in Bulacan.

The composition of Gilas for the second round has yet to be determined.
