During the opening festivities of the 2019 PBA All-Star Weekend in Calasiao, Pangasinan, veteran swingman Rey Guevarra won his second straight Slam Dunk Contest championship.
But Guevarra’s success in this year’s contest is actually more meaningful than winning it while in pain. The dunk star has now tied KG Cañaleta for the most number of dunk titles with five.
Cañaleta, a 14-year league veteran currently playing for the Meralco Bolts, won his fifth title back in 2012. His first title came in 2005, which started his three-year reign as dunk king until 2007.
“Siyempre sobrang special kasi na-tie ko yung idol ko, si KG,” Guevarra said.
Both Guevarra and Cañaleta have shown no signs of slowing down. So now, a question has been raised: will we ever see them go toe-to-toe to determine who will the most number of dunk titles?
Even Guevarra doesn’t know yet.
“Enjoy ko muna yung ngayon. Bahala na yung next year,” he said.
This year’s All-Star festivities haven’t even reached their culmination, but Guevarra’s record-tying victory has already given the fans something to look forward to for next year’s spectacle.
