UAAP Season 77 Judo Championships Women’s Results and Recap


The UAAP judo championship tournament format is different compared to the majority of the league.

Since 2005, the judo tournament does not employ the team round robin format. Instead, UAAP Judo utilizes a bracket system wherein each judoka placement in a bracket is based on seeding. Moreover, judokas coming from the same school are seeded away from each other in the earlier stages of the tournament. Finally, fallen judokas from the earlier rounds can still compete for a bronze medal. The fallen judokas from the earlier matches are moved to another bracket that culminates to the 2 bronze medal matches.

Here we take a look at the women’s judo tournament for the 77th Season of the UAAP:


 

Women’s Heavyweight (+78 kg) Division 

DLSU’s Pongase throws UST’s Lucman in spectacular fashion to win the Women’s Heavyweight gold

The number of lady judokas is set a six. DLSU’s Justine Pongase and UP’s Mary Villena received automatic berths to the semifinals.

Quarterfinals:

Reniel Castillo (UST) defeated Jenina Torrente (UP) via points due to a wazari and 2 yukos

Princess Lucman (UST) defeated Seanne Chung (ADMU) via an ippon due to a oseikomi (pin) with 1:27 remaining

Princess Lucman (UST) defeated Mary Villena (UP) via a hansoku-make (disqualifiction) with 2:00 remaining

Women’s Half-heavyweight (-78 kg) Division

San Andres bags Women’s half-heavyweight gold to give UST the UAAP S77 Judo Women’s Championship

The number of lady judokas competing is set at seven. The format for the half-heavyweight division tournament is a sudden death seven-man tournament with a judoka, Jamaik Ponciano, having an automatic berth to the semifinals.

Kristine Yu (UP) defeated Precious Benablo (DLSU) via an ippon due to a seionage with 3:32 remaining

Beatriz Que (UP) defeated Maria Elyssa Bagos (ADMU) via an ippon due to an oseikami (pin) with 1:52 remaining

Women’s Middleweight (-70 kg) Division

The number of lady judokas competing is set at eight. The format for the middleweight division tournament is a sudden death eight-man tournament.

Women’s Lightweight (-57 kg) Division

 Moran bags 3rd gold for ADMU to sweep all women’s division in day 1

The number of lady judokas set at this division is 11. UPD’s Regina Raymundo, UE’s Sandra Samson & Carmela Tagle, DLSU’s Alyssa Reyes and ADU’s Maria Yongco received byes in the elimination round.

Women’s Half-lightweight (-52 kg) Division

ADMU takes another gold with Moran’s half-lightweight tournament win

The number of lady judokas competing is set at 11. Five judokas received byes in the elimination round. UST’s Tracy Honorio, UP’s Sri Anabo, Ue’s Karlein Padua, DLSU’s Katherine Gilbuena, UST’s Rhodesa Bayas and ADMU’s Heceta Deanna faced-off to advance into the quarterfinals.

ADMU’s dela Costa finishes all her opponents to bag Extra-lightweight gold 

The lady judokas set at this division is nine. All judokas receive an automatic quarterfinals berth except for UST’s Kimberly Pantoja and ADMU’s Maria Veloso who have to face-off in an eliminator.

Rocin Rodriguez (UE) defeated Samantha Gaerlan (DLSU) via an ippon due to a submission by way of an armbar with 3:40 remaining

Maria Veloso (ADMU) defeated Angel Juanillas (UP) via an ippon due to a throw with :29 remaining

Finals:

Samantha dela Costa (ADMU) defeated Rocin Rodriguez (UE) via an ippon by way of an uranage with :51 remaining to win the UAAP Season 77 Judo Women’s Extra-lightweight division

 


 

UAAP Season 77 Women’s Judo Championships: the Aftermath

In computing the winner of the overall championship for women’s judo, the number of medals received is the basis in the computation. The final medal count is as follows:

Just like in the men’s division, the UST Lady Judokas won the women’s division but with a huge margin. The Ateneo Lady Judokas finished in 2nd place even with a league-leading three gold medals. UE edged out the UP Lady Maroons by just a statistical point to win 3rd place.
