All the eight presidents of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines have decided to cancel the Season 83 tournament.
In a statement by the league, the Board of Trustees deemed that it is still not possible to hold a sporting event for student-athletes in the next six months – at the very least – due to the threat of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“After a series of discussions, the UAAP Board of Trustees came to this difficult decision, putting major consideration on the health and safety of the student-athletes and those involved in the operations of our competitions.”
Late this year, the Inter-agency Task Force formed a Technical Working Group to formulate protocols for the resumption of collegiate varsity training.
Up until now, it has yet to be approved.
Moreover, all eight universities from the UAAP will not allow face-to-face classes for their second semester.
“The decision will allow UAAP member-schools to plan their activities for the remainder of the academic year, as well as their athletic programs for next season,” it continued.
Back on April 7, the league cancelled the rest of Season 82 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
It was later deemed that graduating fifth-year student-athletes who were not able to finish or play their event will be granted another year of eligibility.
This time around, both the BOT and Board of Managing Directors will revisit that ruling as some student-athletes will hit the age of 27 once Season 84 plays out late next year.
“Both the Board of Trustees and the Board of Managing Directors will further discuss the implications of the cancellation for the guidance of the member-schools and student-athlete.”
La Salle will still be the host of Season 84.
