Italy team captain Simone Giannelli came to the Philippines chasing back-to-back titles in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, but what he didn’t expect was leaving behind something far greater.
Giannelli — one of six players immortalized in the Volleyball Legacy Art Project’s vibrant outdoor mural at a court in Parañaque — expressed his gratitude not just for the warm welcome he received during the championship, but for the opportunity to inspire the next generation.
“First of all, I’m very grateful for what the Filipinos did for me. That playground is amazing. I want to meet the artist, congratulate him, and thank him and the entire volleyball community because it was an incredible initiative,” Giannelli said.
The 29-year-old playmaker admitted he never imagined being in a position to inspire young athletes in the Philippines, yet the experience left a mark far beyond the victories he came to achieve.
“Never in my life did I think I would have a court in Manila represent me, and to be there permanently is amazing for the kids. The message I want to give them is to try to be a good person,” he said.
Giannelli continued to inspire on the court on Sunday, leading Italy to a four-set victory over Bulgaria in the gold medal match, 25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-10, completing their back-to-back championship quest on the world stage.
The pride of Bolzano, Italy, once again anchored his team’s campaign, earning his second consecutive Best Setter award and capping an impressive and inspiring run.
“It’s amazing to be here and to be gold medalists for the second time. It’s something I never imagined in my life. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to play here, to play with my teammates, and to enjoy the court. I think we made history today as back-to-back champions,” he said.
Beyond the medals and accolades, Giannelli reflected on the broader responsibility that comes with his presence, emphasizing that every court he steps on is an opportunity to inspire.
“The FIVB Volleyball Foundation is excellent because it does great things for the sport. It’s very important, because not everywhere in the world has the same opportunities. I think we have to make a positive impact with our presence in every country we visit,” he said.
