The Philippine Women’s National Football Team enjoyed a triumphant start to its 31st Southeast Asian Games campaign through a 5-0 victory over Cambodia, Monday night, at the Cam Pha Stadium in Vietnam.
The result means that the Filipinas currently top Group A with three points while the Cambodians look to bounce back when they go up against Vietnam.
“I think in the second half when we found our legs and found our energy, we were definitely more effective but a lot of room for improvement,” said coach Alen Stajcic.
Isabella Flanigan set the tone for the Philippines when she scored from outside the box to break the deadlock 27 minutes into the contest.
Come the second half, Stajcic’s wards went goal crazy to seal the win. Sarina Bolden’s header doubled the Philippines’ lead at the 64th minute while Eva Madarang then provided the third goal of the match in the 67th minute.
Quinley Quezada then scored a header in the 76th minute and substitute Anicka Castaneda finished from close range at the 80th minute to cap off a fine evening for the Filipinas.
The Filipinas look to build on this winning start as they take on fellow 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup side Vietnam on Wednesday, 8:00 PM.
