Riza Pasuit’s bid for an Olympic berth ended Tuesday (Manila time), as she lost to top seed Shih-Yi Wu of Chinese Taipei via a unanimous decision in the 2020 Asia and Oceania Olympic Boxing Qualifiers at the Prince Hamzeh Hall, Sport City in Amman, Jordan.
Pasuit had to eke out a split decision win over Saya Hamamoto last March 5 to advance to the next round. In contrast, Wu had a bye to the women’s lightweight quarterfinals as a result of being the top seed.
And being fresh proved to be the difference in the bout.
Wu, who already had a huge reach advantage over Pasuit, jabbed her way to victory in all three rounds. Pasuit, on the other hand, only had a few good moments in the lopsided bout.
So far, only middleweight Eumir Marcial has advanced to the Tokyo Olympics.
Carlo Paalam and Irish Magno still have a chance to do so if either of them wins the box-off.
