Junmilardo Ogayre gave the Philippine boxing team something to cheer about after securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the men’s 60kg division at the 20th Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Friday at Nishio Gymnasium.
Ogayre dominated Nepal’s Khagendra Roka Magar to earn a unanimous decision victory in their Round of 16 bout, even receiving a 10-8 scorecard from one of the judges in the second round.
The 27-year-old veteran will face a stern challenge in Uzbekistan’s Abdulmalik Khalokov, with a guaranteed medal at stake. Their quarterfinal bout is set for Sunday at 5 p.m. Philippine time.
It was a welcome win for the Philippines, which had earlier lost another boxer from the draw.
Riza Pasuit, meanwhile, suffered a unanimous decision loss to Southeast Asian rival Natnicha Chongprongklang of Thailand in their own Round of 16 clash in the women’s 54kg division.
