Phillip Delarmino could not make it back-to-back after suffering a 1-2 defeat to hometown bet Nguyen Doan Long in the men’s combat minus-57 kg muaythai final of the 31st Southeast Asian Games, Sunday at the Vinh Phuc Gymnasium in Vinh Phuc, Vietnam.
It was a rematch of the final three years ago. There, Delarmino took down Nguyen, but this time the Vietnamese took the gold.
The result also is an upset of sorts, as Delarmino was the reigning World Champion in the said weight class after his win in December of last year.
The national muay team ended their Games campaign in Hanoi with one gold, one silver, and five bronzes.
