Santiago’s Saitama, Espejo’s Tokyo advance to All-Japan QF

Jaja Santiago and Marck Espejo led their respective squads to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Empress’ and Emperor’s Cup, respectively, Saturday at the Takasaki Arena in Gunma.

Santiago’s Saitama dominated powerhouse collegiate team University of Tsukuba in straight sets, 25-23, 25-19, 25-22.

The Ageo Medics will face fellow V.League Division 1 team in PFU tomorrow, 1:00 PM.

In their two meetings in the professional league, the two squads split them, both taking one sweep apiece.

Meanwhile, Espejo’s FC Tokyo thrashed familiar foe VC Nagano, 25-14, 26-24, 25-18. The Tridents are currently at the bottom of the V.League standings at 0-14.

FC Tokyo will next face Nagoya in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 3:00 PM.

Bryan Bagunas’ Oita Miyoshi though was eliminated by Sakai, 20-25, 23-25, 22-25. The Weisse Adler could not repeat their magic over the Blazers, whom they once upset in the V.League.

Sakai will battle JTEKT in the quarters.
