AICHI, Japan — What they lacked in height, and financial support, Alas Pilipinas tried to make up for with heart.
The Filipinos put up a brave fight against towering China but fell in straight sets, 21-25, 20-25, 22-25, to bow out of the men’s volleyball tournament of the 20th Asian Games on Monday at Park Arena Komaki here.
The Philippines dropped to 0-2 in Pool D and was officially eliminated from quarterfinal contention, as it can earn a maximum of only three points from its remaining match against Chinese Taipei on Tuesday.
It has been a difficult campaign for Alas, with financial struggles hounding the team from its preparations through the competition itself. These issues had left the players demoralized even before they stepped onto the court.
Still, the Filipinos managed to hold their own against regional powerhouses South Korea and China, keeping several sets competitive despite the challenges surrounding their campaign.
Team captain Bryan Bagunas, who spoke out about the players’ grievances following their opening loss to South Korea, once again led the Filipinos with 15 points on 12 attacks and three aces.
Leo Ordiales added 11 points, while Peng Taguibolos chipped in nine as the Philippines fell to the classification round.
Alas actually outgunned China in attacks, 42-32, but its errors proved costly. The team committed a staggering 27 compared to just nine by the Chinese in the 80-minute contest.
Wen Zihua paced China with 10 points, while Li Yongzhen and Wang Bin added eight points apiece.
