Sanford “Sanford” Vinuya will remain with the Cavalry for the upcoming MPL Philippines season.
The two-time Finals MVP recently signed a contract extension with Team Liquid as the team prepares for its redemption campaign in Season 15, scheduled to run from early March to late June, after falling short in defending its title in the previous MPL PH season.
Rumors circulated on social media about Sanford’s imminent transfer to Fnatic ONIC ID in MPL Indonesia, but Team Liquid manager Mitch Liwanag swiftly addressed and dismissed the claims.
“[He’s] still with Team Liquid PH, he just renewed his contract,” Liwanag told Tiebreaker Times in a brief chat.
Team Liquid kick-started the 2024 cycle on a strong note, finishing the MPL PH Season 13 elimination round as the second seed with a 9-5 record before rampaging through the playoffs, which was capped off by a dominant 4-0 win over Falcons AP Bren in the grand finals.
Unfortunately, the team was unable to sustain its momentum during the ML:BB Mid Season Cup in Riyadh, falling to AP Bren 1-3 in the semifinals after a flawless run in the group stage through to the quarterfinals.
The downward spiral continued for Team Liquid in Season 14.
After a rollercoaster regular season campaign, where they secured eight wins and six losses—finishing fifth—the then reigning MPL PH champion suffered a shocking first-round exit at the hands of Aurora.
Their early exit cost them the opportunity to compete in the M6 World Championship, which was ultimately won by fellow Filipino squad Fnatic ONIC.
But with Sanford locked in for the following cycle, Team Liquid is expected to make another run at the MPL PH title, as well as the Mid Season Cup and the M-Series.
