Taguig used a huge first half to outmuscle Stan District 4, 70-55, in its 2021 Chooks-to-Go NBL Chairman’s Cup debut at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga, Saturday.
The Generals cruised to a 16-point advantage at the break, thanks to their defense, limiting the SparTANs to just 24 while they converted 40 points.
In the second half, eight points was the closest District 4 could get as Taguig had answers every time its foes made a run.
This was SparTANs’ fourth loss in as many games, slipping to rock bottom in the 11-team tournament.
Mike Sampurna spearheaded Taguig with 21 points on a very efficient 9-of-12 clip from the field, 10 rebounds, and three assists.
Richmond Gilbero added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Noel Santos chimed in four points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and two steals off the bench.
The Generals capitalized on the SparTANs errors, translating 17 turnovers to 20 easy points. They also ran away with the ball, scoring 26 fastbreak points while their foes only had 11.
Khenth Guiab continued to lift District 4 with 14 points and 14 rebounds in 45 minutes on the floor. However, he shot a poor 6-of-19 from the field.
Kim Penohermoso and Jared Sevilla were the other SparTANs in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Stan D4 dropped to 0-4.
The Generals come back in action tomorrow when they face the winless Laguna at 1:15 pm at the same venue.
