Rob Labagala named new San Sebastian head coach, backed by Red Dynasty

San Sebastian has made its decision.

One of the country’s brightest young coaches, Rob Labagala, has been chosen as the next head coach of the Golden Stags.

Red Dynasty will also provide its full support for Labagala in his new journey.

The formal contract signing took place on Thursday at San Sebastian’s campus, with school president Rev. Fr. Rafael B. Pecson, O.A.R, signing on the dotted line.

Labagala was one of five coaches shortlisted by the school to replace Arvin Bonleon. The other candidates included Jeffrey Perlas, Joe Silva, Rodney Santos, and Raymond Valenzona.

Despite being the youngest among the candidates at 40 years old, Labagala boasts extensive coaching experience, particularly in grassroots basketball.

Following his playing career in 2015, Labagala founded Passion Sports — a developmental program designed for aspiring players.UAAP-87-NU-Rob-Labagala Rob Labagala named new San Sebastian head coach, backed by Red Dynasty Basketball NCAA News SSC-R - philippine sports news

The former UE Red Warrior served as an assistant coach at University of the East in 2019 under the late Bong Tan. He also worked with Josh Reyes for Gilas Boys, Jeff Napa at National University, and Jeff Perlas at Centro Escolar University.

Currently, Labagala is also an assistant coach for MPBL team Starhorse-Basilan.

Now, he steps into a head coaching role for the first time.

Red Dynasty owner Jackson Chua expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to help rebuild San Sebastian’s program.

“It’s a big challenge and responsibility, but I’m very thankful and happy to be entrusted with this opportunity,” Chua said.

San Sebastian last reached the Final Four in NCAA Season 95 (2019), while its most recent championship dates back to NCAA Season 85 (2009).

“We’re committed to giving our all-out support to make San Sebastian proud, with the goal of reaching the Final Four and ultimately bringing home the championship,” said Chua.
