Philippines rolls past Thailand in SEABA U18 opener


Jolo Mendoza scored 16 points in the first half while four others scored in double-digits as the Philippines crushed Thailand, 101-45 in the 2016 SEABA U18 Championship Saturday in Medan, Indonesia.

Mendoza shot 4-for-5 from three-point area and played just a few minutes the second half as the Philippines used a 30-10 second quarter to break away and bury Thailand for good.

Mendoza and Alain Jethro Madrigal each hit a triple as the Philippines used a 13-0 run in the second period to turn a 34-21 lead into a 47-21 cushion. The team went on to close the quarter on a 28-3 note, capped by a trey from Gian Mamuyac.

Joshua Sinclair and Rendell Lee added 12 points each, while Evan Nelle and John Bryle Bahio contributed 10 points apiece.

All players scored for the Philippines and no one played for more than 27 minutes. The squad drew 27 extra points from 24 Thailand turnovers, and also held a commanding 48-20 advantage in points in the paint.

The team also shot 48.7 percent from the field and made 13-for-28 from long range, compared to only 3-for-23 for Thailand.

The Philippines will play Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia in the next four days. The top two teams in the six-team field shall advance to the gold medal and earn tickets to the 2016 FIBA Asia U18 Championship later this year.
