The Philippine National Women’s Football Team suffered a 0-4 loss to Vietnam which officially eliminated them from the 2016 AFF Women’s Championships yesterday (July 28, 2016) at the Mandalarthiri Stadium in Myanmar.
This was the second four-goal drubbing the Philippines experienced in this tournament after they experienced a similar outcome against Thailand in their first group stage game.
Goals from Nguyễn Thị Hòa (7′), Nguyễn Thị Tuyết Dung (30′, 71′) and Nguyễn Thị Minh Nguyệt (80′) sealed the Philippines’ fate in the tournament. Although the scoreline looks bad for the Philippines, the performance was a good one due to only four goals being conceded.
For the sake of comparison, Singapore loss to Vietnam with a score of 0-14 after ninety minutes.
Vietnam opened the scoring when Nguyet’s cross was met by Hoa at the 7th minute of the game. Dung later added to their tally at the 30th minute to give Vietnam a 0-2 lead over the Philippines at the break.
Hard work from the Filipinas and two good saves from goalie Inna Palacios prevented more goals for Vietman. That resilience, though, broke in the last twenty minutes of the game. Dung scored her second of the game at the 71st minute and Nguyet’s header at the 80th minute capped off the 0-4 victory for Vietnam.
It was a difficult two-game experience for the Filipinas as Thailand recently competed in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and Vietnam are perennial championship contenders in this competition.
With qualification hopes over, pride will be the only thing at stake for the Filipinas in their last group stage game. Singapore will be the Philippines’ final opponents in this competition. The game will be played on Saturday (July 30, 2016; 7:00PM) at the Mandalarthiri Stadium.
