Petro Gazz bucks fatigue, Iriga-Navy for third win

Having played in all five playdates of the PVL Open Conference, the Petro Gazz Angels capped off their grueling stretch with a gutsy win over the Iriga-Navy Oragons, 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 28-26, at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Fresh off a win against heavily-favored Creamline yesterday, Petro Gazz came out sharp against the Oragons, dominating the first two sets.

Faced with a feisty Iriga run in the third set, the wheels came off for the Angels, as the Oragons extended the match thanks to errors and conversions from Grazielle Bombita.

Trailing 22-24 after a Ranya Musa service error, the Angels’ bench mob took over. Jonah Sabete and Rachel Austero traded turns scoring clutch points for Petro Gazz. Austero eventually ended the match with an ace following a Sabete kill.

Petro Gazz head coach Jerry Yee lauded his team’s perseverance through the tough schedule.

“May training pa, ‘di ba? Ang dami kino-correct. Siyempre hindi naman pwedeng relaxed lang ‘yung training so pagod talaga eh. Kahit sinong bunutin natin ganoon eh, so fatigue talaga,” said Yee, who has guided his team to a 3-2 record. “Ayun, swerte siguro kami na kahit papaano nakakakapit tayo sa games so long rest pero siyempre training pa rin, konting pahinga.”

Paneng Mercado led the Angels’ balanced scoresheet with 12 points, while Musa added 11 markers in just two sets of action.

Bombita topped all scorers with 21 points, while Florence Madulid added 17.

Petro Gazz take on the Ateneo-Motolite Lady Eagles (1-0) on Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre. Iriga (0-4) aim for their first win against the Creamline Cool Smashers (0-1) on Sunday at the same venue.
