2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

No interview policy, strict measures still on-going in Gilas practices

Monday morning marked the third practice of Gilas Pilipinas in their preparations for the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers slated this November. And for the third straight session, the doors of the Meralco Gym remained closed to the public.

Strict measures have been implemented yet again, that even the media were not allowed access inside — even network TV5, which has Gilas head coach Chot Reyes as its’ president, was not allowed to record a few clips of the sessions.

The only news that can be brought out from the practices, for now, is the players’ attendance, as the no interview policy is still in effect until further notice. Moreover, taking of photos and videos are strictly prohibited.

The facility’s head of security told Tiebreaker Times that Reyes was furious during one moment of the morning practice, as the usually calm tactician himself caught a fan recording the workout through his mobile phone.

The man, who was never identified, had slipped past the guards inside the gym. After a brief scolding, he was then sent out by security moments after being caught by Reyes.

Twelve players were present in Monday’s session — Jayson Castro, June Mar Fajardo, Gabe Norwood, Calvin Abueva, Raymond Almazan, Troy Rosario, Allein Maliksi, Roger Pogoy, Carl Cruz, Mac Belo, Kevin Alas, and Kiefer Ravena.

As of now, it is still unsure when will the Nationals’ practices be open to the public. Or, will it even be available for the public to watch anymore.

The 2017 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers raises its curtains on November 24 when Gilas takes on Japan in Tokyo.
