Soltones, San Sebastian demolish Perpetual for semis spot

The Iron Lady Gretchel Soltones and the Lady Stags bring down the hammer

NCAA women’s volleyball powerhouse San Sebastian College-Recoletos Lady Stags marched to another post-season appearance after dominating the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Altas, 25-22, 25-13, 25-13, Wednesday afternoon at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Reigning back-to-back Most Valuable Player Soltones finished a point shy of a 20-point output, with 18 attacks and a service ace.

The Lady Stags poured in 38 spikes against the Altas’ mere 18, along with 10 service aces. The Altas capitalized on their height advantage to deny 10 hits from the opponents.

Middle blocker Lourdes Clemente soared highest for the white-shirts with 10 points off six attacks and four blocks.

San Sebastian head coach Roger Gorayeb was pleased that his wards had maintained their physical condition despite lack of training during the Christmas break.

“Siyempre masaya kasi yung katawan nila di naman masyadong nagbago,” he said.

However, he proceeded, “Pero marami pang laro. Hindi ka lang pwedeng magtiwala na; gusto rin namang manalo ng kabila.”

Despite getting 34 excellent sets, for coach Gorayeb, Vira Guillema still needs to work on her game for the Stags going forward.

The multi-titled mentor shared, “Si Vira kasi yung execution niya, decision making niya, kulang sa ayos eh. Safe siyang magset eh, very simple. Kulang sa risk factor.”

The undefeated Lady Stags (7-0) will take on the upstart Lyceum Lady Pirates (5-1) on Monday, January 23. The Lady Altas (3-3), on the hand, will battle with the Lady Bombers (2-5) on Friday, January 20.
