With their season on the line, Chris Hubilla put up a monster performance for San Beda – Taytay, powering the Red Cubs to the last Final Four slot in the NCAA Season 98 Juniors Basketball Tournament after eliminating San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 93-80, on Thursday at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.
With the win, San Beda will have a duel against Mapua University on Monday in the stepladder for a chance to get a better standing in the Final Four.
Hubilla finished with a monster game of 21 points and 19 rebounds, two assists, and four steals.
Head coach Miko Roldan was happy for the Beda community as they are back once again in the Final Four.
“I’m happy for the win, I’m happy for the boys, I’m happy for the community. Kahit papano at least nasa Final Four kami and we have a chance to [get] the number 2 or number 3, dipende na samin,” he said.
After a neck-and-neck battle in the first half, the Red Cubs were able to get their first taste of a double-digit lead after a Jharmaine Lecciones triple, 63-53 midway through the third.
The lead ballooned by as much as 20, 79-59 following an Andrei Dungo fastbreak in the middle of the payoff period.
The Staglets however did not give up just yet as they were able to cut it to nine, 76-85, thanks to a Rion Porcadas back-to-back triples and Justine Bandino’s three right at the 1:14 mark.
Unfortunately for them, Cristopher Hubilla answered back with a dagger after a basket-plus-foul right before entering the final minute of the game, bringing their lead back in double figures, 88-76.
John Lopez added 19 markers, six boards, and three steals, while Dungo had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds both for the Red Cubs.
For the Staglets, Mark De Leon ended up with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists. Jardinico and Louie Datario added 11 and 10 apiece.
