Midlife Halftime: The origin story of a gym that’s revolutionary

TJ Sulit has always been adept at juggling multiple responsibilities, He has also shown a penchant for combining seemingly distinct disciplines to make for a comprehensive program where things eventually, logically fall into place.

Sulit is an entrepreneur who is the Director of Game Changer Business Solutions, a boutique agency that provides assistance and expertise to clients as they go through the business development cycle.

He is also a martial arts practitioner, a fitness advocate, and a coach who has found a way to turn his passion for sports into a business venture that is grounded on advocacy of inclusivity.

Sulit is the owner of Origins Martial Arts at the Ayala Malls Solenad in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.Origins-Solenad-front Midlife Halftime: The origin story of a gym that’s revolutionary Bandwagon Wire Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Judo - philippine sports news

With Origins, Sulit is able to provide an exclusive venue for people who wish to learn the sport of jiujitsu. He said, “Jiujitsu clubs typically rent specific timeslots in gyms. My goal as a board member of the Jiujitsu Federation of the Philippines is to have a strong Southern Tagalog chapter with Sta. Rosa as the hub. We are the first one in Nuvali.”

Origins allows enrollees the autonomy to choose their level of class. “Even if you are a beginner and you think you can keep up with those in the intermediate level, then we will not stop you from joining the intermediate class,” Sulit mentioned. “You just have to show you can hang with the intermediate. But you still have the option to move to the beginner’s class.”

It is this kind of progressive thinking and inclusivity that sets Origins apart from other dojos. This is manifested event in the design and look of their facilities. “We teach a philosophy of openness. The culture in martial arts is often territorial. We want to offer a place where everyone is comfortable, a gym that is not intimidating and is instead bright and has a homey feel.”

But Origins is more than just grappling and jiujitsu. There are two other unique features that Origins makes available to its clientele.

Aside from being a jiujitsu expert, Sulit is also a 3rd-degree black belter in judo. This enables Origins to also offer judo classes for kids.Origins-Solenad Midlife Halftime: The origin story of a gym that’s revolutionary Bandwagon Wire Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Judo - philippine sports news

Origins is both a martial arts dojo and a strength and conditioning facility offering state-of-the-art technology and training methodologies.

This is where Sulit’s business partner in the branch, Edsel Segovia, comes in.

Segovia is an experienced personal trainer who honed his craft in the United States and Canada. He and Sulit are working hand in hand in incorporating the Segovia Strength methodology into martial arts.

The objective always, Segovia says, is to maximize human performance. When strength is compromised, one cannot perform to one’s optimum abilities.Segovia-Strength-Solenad Midlife Halftime: The origin story of a gym that’s revolutionary Bandwagon Wire Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Judo - philippine sports news

Segovia talks about strength and conditioning in the simplest terms possible that can be easily understood by the average reasonable person. He explained, “When we move, our bodies know the end result. So for example, when you are injured and you want a sip of water, you will find a way to reach for the glass of water. Your body will compensate, but there will be consequences.

“With us, we know how the body compensates. We know that muscle and balance exist. We know that asymmetry exists. We know that a lot happens in the joints.”

Segovia has world-class diagnostics and technology that give it the capability to measure human performance. They have the equipment to assess specific body parts and conduct muscle testing that allow them to measure, for instance, hamstring strength.

Segovia adds, “For high-caliber athletes, they are on a different level. They are better compensators. We push them. We take a look at their balance. We layer that with performance.”

Origins’ mission, as founder Sulit has envisioned, has always been to reach out to a broad spectrum of people. Martial arts and physical conditioning, in Sulit’s mind, should be for anyone and everyone. And that is what Origins has done since its inception. Origins has always sought to give value back to its members.

After all, that is what a real gym should aspire for – that those who go in will come out as better individuals who will have a positive impact on the community.
