Marc Pingris has found himself a job in basketball.
The nine-time Philippine Basketball Champion has accepted the role of being the commissioner of the soon-to-be-launched professional regional league Pilipinas Super League.
And the 40-year-old native of Pozorrubio, Pangasinan is just grateful for the opportunity.
“I’m very, very thankful for this opportunity at sa tiwalang binigay sa akin ng PSL,” Pingris told Tiebreaker Times.
“Asahan nila na gagawin namin ang lahat para sa liga na ‘to at para mapasaya ang mga fans at mga players.”
Being the commissioner of this league that is backed by Dumper Party List, Cocolife, Malyab, Tri Energy Corporation, Phenom Sportswear, Wilson, and Corban will be Pingris’ first job in the sport he played from 2002-2019.
For the league’s management, getting Pingris as commissioner is a no-brainer. Helping him also is former Philippine Basketball League commissioner Chino Trinidad, who will be the league’s consultant.
“We are so happy to have the one and only Pinoy Sakuragi sa Liga ng Pinoy,” read the statement of the league which is headed by president Rocky Chan.
“We have the same vision and goals with Marc that is why it felt like a match made in heaven. Coming from humble beginnings, Marc also serves as an inspiration and role model to our players,” it continued about the Gilas legend.
“We never had a hard time convincing him to be the commissioner and ambassador of our league and we are happy to have him on board.”
“This opportunity for Marc Pingris to work as Commissioner of Pilipinas Super League will be another feather in the cap for Marc,” added Pingris’ manager Ed Ponceja. “I’m sure the players in PSL will embrace him with high respect.
“I believe Commissioner Pingris can lead the way for PSL to get things in order. Disciple and hard work in basketball have been his trademark.”
The league is looking at a March 11 start date.
And Pingris can’t wait for it.
“Excited na medyo kinakabahan. But masaya ‘to dahil madami kami plano about sa liga na to. Abangan niyo yan!”
