Fourteen years ago, all of Southeast Asia converged in the Philippines for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games.
And for Senator JV Ejercito, that grand biennial sporting event holds a special place in his heart.
Then the mayor of San Juan, Ejercito still remembers the time the city served as host for the Fencing competition. The event, which the Filipinos lorded over, was held at the old San Juan Gym.
“I remember when I was mayor, we hosted the SEA Games’ fencing, ginawa sa San Juan Gym,” Ejercito recalled.
Now, 14 years later, the SEA Games is making its way back to the Philippines. And the city of San Juan will again have the honor of being a part of the regional spectacle.
The 3×3 Basketball event will be held at the FilOil Flying V Center, still known to many as the San Juan Arena.
Fans will surely flock to venue, considering the footing 3×3 basketball has gained in the country.
“It’s always an honor to host lalo na SEA Games,” said the amiable senator. “Of course, that will be good for us, for tourism, and for the country’s image if we’re able to host big events like this.
“We wish all the organizers all the luck na sana mairaos ng maayos.”
