Jewel Napa had a rough day but did enough to hold on the pole position in women’s RS:X in the 2021 Mussanah Open, Monday evening (Manila time).at the Millennium Resort in Oman.
The lone Filipino female windsurfer who won silver in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games opened the day with a win in Race 6, but she faltered to second and third in the next two races, respectively.
Napa, nonetheless, stays on top with 9.0 net race points ahead of Singapore’s Amanda Ng Ling Kai who has 11.0 points.
On the men’s side, Yancy Kaibigan strung three straight second-place finishes to stay in second spot after eight races in the tournament.
The reigning SEA Games champion is now hard-pressed to take the next races as Thailand’s Natthapong Phonoppharat continues to pull away with 8.0 net points, 9.0 ahead of Kaibigan.
Two-time world champion Geylord Coveta faded to fifth spot with 37.0 points, while Renz Amboy zoomed to sixth at 42.0 points.
Napa and the rest of the Philippine contingent take on the waters again for two scheduled races on Tuesday afternoon.
