ITF: Alex Eala stuns 8th seeded Russian in W80 Poitiers

In what is easily one of the biggest wins of her young and promising career, Filipina teen tennis sensation Alex Eala stunned 32-year-old eight seed Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia, 6-4, 6-3, on Thursday in the second round of the Internationaux Feminins De La Vienne held in Poitiers, France.

The 17-year-old Eala went toe-to-toe with the Russian veteran pro campaigner who is 107th in the world with a career-high ranking of 71st.

The 5’11 Diatchenko has seen action in all the Grand Slam events and has reached the third round of Wimbledon in 2018. She has won three WTA challenger events and has 27 ITF titles to her name.

But all her stellar credentials hardly mattered to the world 248th ranked Eala.

The young Filipina had Diatchenko scrambling all over the court and broke the Russian four times en route to a surprising straight set victory which booked for Eala a spot in the quarterfinals.

Eala will be facing the winner of the match between third seed and world number 101 ranked Xinyu Wang of China and world number 153 Ana Konjuh of Croatia.
