Facing Moraes, Akhmetov made Geje Eustaquio ready for Tauru rematch

Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio looks to settle an old score when ONE Championship hits Manila, Philippines for the final time this year.

The former ONE Flyweight World Champion has a rematch with explosive grappler Toni “Dynamite” Tauru at ONE: Masters of Fate on November 8 at the Mall Of Asia Arena.

Eustaquio lost to Tauru by a first round rear-naked choke at ONE: Age of Domination last December 2016.

Now, Eustaquio is confident he will make it difficult for Tauru to defy “Gravity” once more.

“I think the competition favors me more because back in 2016, we competed in the bantamweight division. This time, we’re in the flyweight division,” Eustaquio said.

Based on what I’ve been seeing, he has struggled in this division. He might be too big, that’s why his strength suffers.”

Since the loss, the 30-year-old from Baguio City has taken on — and beaten — some of the best grapplers in the division.

Eustaquio defeated high-level wrestler Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blackbelt Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes on his way to a brief run as World Champion.

Those experiences have only made him better, and Eustaquio is eager to show it against Tauru in their rematch.

“Most of my competitions in ONE are grapplers. For example, I’ve faced Adriano Moraes three times and he’s a well-known grappler,” Eustaquio said.

“Kairat Akhmetov is a wrestler as well. That is why I’m used to this type of competition where I expect them to take me down and try to impose their jiu-jitsu skills.”

Coming off a first round knockout loss to Yuya “Little Piranha” Wakamatsu at ONE: Dawn of Heroes last August, Eustaquio looks to climb the ladder once more and regain his lost belt.

“I look at the flyweight division positively. The nice thing about our division is that we all have skills, and that is why moving up in the rankings is faster,” he said.

“Let’s say I win against a top caliber fighter. There will always be an opportunity to get that title back. If I prove to ONE that I deserve it, I know they’ll give it to me.”
