Swedish football legend Sven-Göran Eriksson (February 5, 1948-August 26,2024) who led the Philippine Azkals from 2018 to 2019, succumbed to terminal pancreatic cancer on Monday.
He was 76.
The former national team coach led the Azkals to the semifinals of the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup, marking the last time the country reached the final four of the competition.
A few months later, Eriksson guided the country in its debut on the continental stage.
Under his leadership and with key players such as Stephan Schrock, Javier Patiño, and Manuel Ott, the Azkals faced South Korea, China, and Kyrgyzstan in the group stage of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
Eriksson, who announced that he was terminally ill last January, had a legendary career that included winning the Italian Serie A with Lazio and the UEFA Cup with IFK Göteborg.
He also managed the England men’s national team from 2001 to 2006.
