EJ Obiena resets PH record in Germany

EJ Obiena continues to roll in the final stretch of his Olympic build-up, setting the Philippine record in a golden performance in the 2021 Jump and Fly tournament held in Mossingen, Germany.

Obiena tallied a 5.85 meters to win gold in the event — his second gold in three tournaments. He also reset the national record in the process.

He shattered his own record of 5.81-meters, which he notched back in 2019 in Chiari, Italy.

Finishing second and third were Germany’s Zernikel Oleg and Kass Philip and Tom Linus. Oleg finished with a 5.7m leap, while both Philip and Linus tallied an identical 5.4m.

The product of University of Santo Tomas began his Continental Tour campaign by clinching gold in the Gothenburg Grand Prix with a 5.7m leap.

The 25-year-old followed it up with a silver in the 2021 FBK Games after leaping a 5.8m.

So far, Obiena remains the only Team Pilipinas trackster slated for the Tokyo Games.
