For the first time since retiring from professional basketball, one of the most prolific scorers and influential leaders in NBA history Kobe Bryant returned to Manila last weekend.
During his two-day stay in the country, which was part of the Mamba Mentality Tour, Bryant worked with the Filipino youth in various camps.
The highlight of the event though was the Mamba Mentality Night held at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City. Basketball fans were able to pay tribute to the Los Angeles Laker icon and, in the ultimate sign of respect, a Kobe Bryant banner will forever be on the rafters of the Big Dome right beside the “Thrilla in Manila” tarp.
Touched by the moment, Kobe Bryant personally thanked the Filipino fans in a video message.
“To the Philippines, thank you so much for the tremendous honor. Seeing my number retired is something that I will never forget,” he said. “The love that you showed and the way you embraced me is something that I will always remember.”
Moreover, Bryant hopes that the “Mamba Mentality” culture will live on forever with the Filipino youth. “Secondly, always remember to always demand of yourself, always push yourself beyond what your expectations are,” he continued.
