Thailand’s American head coach Chris Daleo has been stuck in the United States since March.
And he has no idea whether it will take part in the second window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.
“They have not discussed their intentions with me. I’m in the US waiting to work,” said the decorated head coach regarding contact with the Basketball Sport Association of Thailand.
“Communication has been minimal.”
Unlike the Philippines, Thailand has brought COVID-19 under control, with only 3,797 cases since March 16.
They achieved this by minimalizing inbound travel from foreign countries.
With this, its professional basketball league, the Thailand Basketball League has been able to resume.
“Thailand is playing in its local league. I don’t know anything else beyond that,” he bared to Tiebreaker Times.
Last month, FIBA Asia announced that it would resume its qualifiers for the continental meet in a bubble set to be held in Manama, Bahrain.
Thailand was supposed to face Gilas twice and Indonesia later this month.
Groupmate Korea earlier announced that it would not participate in the window, citing safety concerns.
Daleo has not received any update on whether the Thais will participate or not.
“It hurts me personally because Thailand basketball was growing and making great strides on the world stage.
“We won silver in the SEA Games and only lost by seven (86-93) against Korea. Now the momentum has come to a stop,” he lamented.
