Capilit stands tall, leads Taguig past Pacific Water to open WNBL campaign


Taguig had a victorious debut, taking down Pacific Water, 60-42, to open its Pia Cayetano WNBL 2021 campaign, Saturday at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga.

After figuring in a see-saw battle in the first period, the debuting Lady Generals made 19 points in the second quarter while putting the clamps on the Queens to take a 32-21 lead at halftime.

Taguig then increased its margin to 16 entering the fourth frame, 46-30, before putting on the finishing touches.

A jumper by Tin Capilit at the 3:46 mark of the payoff period put the Lady Generals ahead by 24, 60-36, their biggest advantage of the match.

The 4-foot-11 Capilit stood the tallest, leading Taguig with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, three rebounds, three assists, and a block. She was also a plus-19 in her 23 minutes on the floor.

Wiz Duazo just missed on a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Janeth Sison had an all-around game with nine points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block.

Kikay Gandalla, though scoreless, still made her presence felt with nine rebounds and six assists.

Snow Peñaranda paced the Queens with 17 points and 11 rebounds against five turnovers, while Jolina Go chipped in 10 points.

Center Cara Buendia went 0-of-10 from the field but grabbed 13 rebounds, three steals, two assists, and one block in 26 minutes.

The Queens are still winless after three outings, drowning to the bottom of the league.

Gemma Miranda and Monique del Carmen did not play in the game.

Taguig will play again tomorrow, going against Parañaque at 11:15 AM at the same venue.
