Belo, Accelerators overpower Aguilas for early D-League lead

The Phoenix Accelerators picked up their second win after dispatching the Topstar ZC-Mindanao Aguilas, 108-78 Thursday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the JCSGO Seed Dome in Quezon City.

The Accelerators saw little challenge from the Aguilas. After trailing 11-0 to start the game, Phoenix took control, closing the first half outscoring Mindanao 51-30.

Already ahead by 10 entering the fourth quarter, Phoenix then went on a 33-13 fourth quarter to pull away.

Mac Belo topscored with 25 points on 8-for-12 field goal shooting and 3-for-5 shooting from long range. Mike Tolomia had an all-around game, finishing with 22 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

“Binibigyan lang ako ng kumpiyansa nina coach. Sabi nila, tira lang ng tira para makuha ko rhythm ko,” Belo said.

Ed Daquioag contributed 16 points while Jens Knuttel and Roger Pogoy chipped in 10 points each.

Phoenix shot 54 percent from the field and had 36 points off 23 Mindanao turnovers.

Despite going 2-0 in the conference, though, head coach Erick Gonzales still wants more consistency from his troops.

“Hindi kami nagkulang sa paalala sa players, even yesterday, even before the start of the league, na akala niyo wala, pero basketball players din yun,” Gonzales said.

“We better be consistent. Yun lang naman ang ine-emphasize namin.”

Jul-Ashri Ignacio led the 0-2 Aguilas with 12 points. JR Ongteco added 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Scores:

Phoenix (108) – Belo 25, Tolomia 22, Daquioag 16, Knuttel 10, Pogoy 10, Inigo 7, Escoto 5, Jamito 5, Pascual 4, Batino 2, Mendoza 2, Andrada 0, Tamsi 0.
