Baser Amer left frustrated as calf strain might force him out of conference

Baser Amer couldn’t help but feel frustrated over the disruption of what’s turning out to be a solid conference personally following another calf injury.

The Blackwater guard is being hounded by a strained right calf, the very reason why he only played for a total of 62 seconds in the Bossing’s 69-91 loss to the league-leading Magnolia in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, Sunday night.

It could be recalled that the 30-year-old suffered the same injury on the other leg last season, and only recovered from it fully in the last Philippine Cup.

“Kaya nga e. Ganda nga ng nilalaro ng team, and ang ganda rin ng nilalaro ko sana this conference, tapos may nangyari na ganito,” Amer lamented to reporters moments after the match at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

“‘Di natin control ‘yung mga ganitong injury eh. Siguro next time, mas palakasin ko pa. Next conference, kailangan ko pa magpalakas.”

The San Beda great was averaging an impressive 18.4 points in the mid-season conference before sitting out their meeting against Converge last October 30, where he witnessed his side absorb a 77-71 loss in Antipolo.

Still, he tried to play through the pain against the Hotshots, only to realize that he’s yet to recover. Amer was subbed in at the 6:44-mark of the opening quarter, and then requested to be brought out with 5:42 left on the clock.

He was eventually ruled out of the match, leaving with only one foul to his name — the foul against Jio Jalalon to stop play and allow him to get out.

“May isang movement lang ako na ginawa. Tapos, parang may kumuryente. Finoul ko si Jio, tapos nagpa-sub na ako,” recalled the seven-year pro.

Amer will undergo another MRI scan soon to check the extent of the injury, which has put a lot of uncertainty to his status for the rest of the conference.

Blackwater, who’s dropped to 3-6, has three more games left in the elimination round — Meralco, Ginebra, and Rain or Shine, in that order.

“‘Di ko alam. Last three games, baka may malaro akong isa, or baka wala na. As of now, sobrang sakit. Sobrang sakit talaga,” he said.

The second game of each PBA gameday is live-streamed on SMART Sports.
