Rose Jean Ramos launched the campaign of the Philippine national weightlifting team by winning three silvers in the women’s under-45 kg at the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships held on Friday at the Jinju Arena in South Korea.
She had previously won back-to-back Youth World championships in this weight category.
Ramos finished second in both the snatch and clean and jerk, with best lifts of 73 kg and 88 kg, respectively, earning a silver medal overall with a total of 161 kg.
Thailand’s Chayuttra Pramongkhol won the Asian title by lifting a massive 100 kg in the clean and jerk, which brought her total to 177, securing her a four-point lead after the snatch.
Indonesia’s Siti Nafisatul Hariroh completed the podium with a total of 159 kg and lifts of 71 kg and 88 kg in the snatch and clean and jerk, respectively.
The continental championships serve as one of the events for qualification points for select weight classes, including the women’s under-49 kg, for next year’s Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
Rosegie Ramos, the sister of Rose Jean Ramos, topped the snatch for Group B in the women’s under-49 kg weight category with 84 kg.
However, she struggled in the clean and jerk with two missed attempts at 102 kg, settling for 99 kg.
She ended ninth overall with a total of 183 kg, the same as her compatriot Lovely Inan.
Inan showed promise, particularly in the clean and jerk, with a lift of 103 kg, but her snatch of 80 kg was not enough to raise her ranking, and she finished just below the elder Ramos.
China’s Jiang Huihua and Jou Zhihui took the gold and silver medals, respectively, in the women’s under-49 kg weight category, with a total of 207 kg and 204 kg.
Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao completed the podium with a total of 200 kg. Jiang, Hou, and Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen were the top three in the snatch, with lifts of 94 kg, 93 kg, and 90 kg, respectively.
In Group B, Rira Suzuki of Japan won the silver over Hou in the clean and jerk with a lift of 111 kg and zero “no lifts,” while Hou missed her attempt at 115 kg. Jiang also won the clean and jerk title with a lift of 113 kg.
