Former champion Vanessa Sarno ended up with three silver medals in the women’s under-71 kg category of the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships, with a total of 239 on Tuesday at the Jinju Arena in South Korea.
Sarno, who won the 2021 title as a 17-year-old, made all the attempts she took in the snatch, with her best being a new national record of 107, putting her on top.
However, China’s Liao Guifang managed to surpass her with a 110 on her first attempt, winning the snatch title and taking the lead. Liao later set a new world record in the snatch section with a best lift of 120 kg.
Liao then added 148 in the clean and jerk, setting a new world record of 268 in total to win the Asian title, pushing Sarno to second place with a total of 239 and earning her silver medals in both the clean and jerk and snatch.
Kristel Macrohon ended in eighth place with a total of 218, 98 in the snatch and 120 in the C&J.
The Philippines concluded its campaign with two silver medals, thanks to Sarno and Rose Jean Ramos in the women’s under-45 kg category.
