Angel Canino beams as proud ‘ate’ watching Shaina Nitura mature

Angel Canino had nothing but praise for Adamson University after their five-set showdown in the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday.

Despite the De La Salle University Lady Spikers claiming the victory, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21, 13-25, 15-5, Canino was impressed by how the Lady Falcons have evolved into a more balanced team, no longer relying solely on Shaina Nitura.

“Actually, ngayon, talagang may katulong na talaga si Shai. Yung team talaga nila, lumalaban na as a team. Lumalaban talaga sila as a team,” noticed Canino on their thrilling matchup.

“Makikita mo na pinupusuan nila kada set and kada puntos. Kaya minsan hindi rin kami nakakakuha ng puntos agad kasi nakikitaan ko rin silang lahat na gusto nilang manalo.”

Nitura delivered 21 points, 17 receptions, and 10 digs in the loss, but this time, help was abundant.

Frances Mordi led the Lady Falcons with 22 points, while middle blocker Third Tuddao and Joy Aseo added 11 and eight points, respectively.

With the defeat, Adamson dropped to 3-3, but Canino had special words for Nitura.

The two shared a bond as teammates in Alas Pilipinas last year during the Southeast Asian Games, AVC Nations Cup, and SEA V.League, despite representing different UAAP schools.

“Si Shaina talaga, all-out ’yun kahit anong laro naman. All-out sa paglalaro. Nilalabas niya talaga yung puso niya sa paglalaro. And nakikita naman every game yung pinaggagawa niya,” said Canino on Nitura.

“Sobrang proud ako as her ate. And at the same time, maganda rin naman yung pinakita ng Adamson. Mas gusto lang rin talaga siguro namin manalo.”

The victory pushed La Salle to a perfect 6-0, with defending champion National University standing in the way of a first-round sweep.
