Alex Eala is ready to make her US Open main draw debut as a professional on Sunday (Manila time), where she will face Denmark’s Clara Tauson.
Tauson, ranked No. 15 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) standings, enters Flushing Meadows as the tournament’s 14th seed.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Eala and Tauson.
The 21-year-old Dane is a proven competitor, boasting three WTA Tour titles — two from 2021 at the Lyon and Luxembourg Opens, and a recent triumph at the Auckland Classic, where she defeated Japan’s Naomi Osaka.
Eala, meanwhile, is coming off a recovery from a shoulder injury that sidelined her from the Cincinnati and Monterrey Opens.
Before the injury, she had an impressive run at the Eastbourne Open, where she reached the final but fell just short of her first WTA Tour title, losing to Australia’s Maya Joint in a dramatic final-set tiebreak.
Now 20, Eala aims to take the next big step in her career, chasing a maiden senior title after capturing the US Open girls’ singles crown in 2022.
