Josh Ybañez rushed to hospital after ankle injury in opener

Josh Ybañez’s UAAP Season 87 campaign began with high hopes — but quickly ended in heartbreak.

The University of Santo Tomas ace collapsed in pain after suffering an apparent right ankle injury late in the Golden Spikers’ 25-20, 22-25, 16-25, 20-25 opening-day loss to the Far Eastern University Diliman Tamaraws on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, casting a shadow over UST’s title aspirations.

The entire arena fell silent as Ybañez, a two-time UAAP MVP and Season 85 Rookie of the Year, writhed on the court in agony.

The injury occurred at the 22-18 mark of the fourth set when the General Santos native attempted a backrow hit. He then landed on the left foot of second-year middle blocker Trevor Valera, twisting his knee upon impact.

UST head coach Odjie Mamon assured reporters that the two-time UAAP silver medalist was immediately rushed to the hospital but declined to disclose its location.

Before the unfortunate setback, Ybanez had been a bright spot for UST, delivering 15 points — all from attacks — in a losing effort.

Despite the potential absence of their 21-year-old star, the Golden Spikers have several players ready to step up.

Alongside mainstays Gboy de Vega and Jayrack de la Noche, UST will rely on Season 85 Second Best Outside Spiker JJ Macam, Season 86 beach volleyball MVP Alche Gupiteo, and promising rookie Al-Bukharie Sali as they brace for the challenges ahead.
