The Philippine Azkals’ Under-19 squad ended its AFC U20 Asian Cup 2023 qualifying campaign with a 1-0 victory over Afghanistan, Sunday evening, at the Al-Saadah Sports Sports Complex in Oman.
Coming off a win against Oman in its previous fixture, Afghanistan headed into the match needing to get all three points to keep their qualification hopes for the final tournament alive.
However, the Philippines had other plans and decided to spoil the party. After a goalless first half, coach Christopher Pedimonte’s boys found a way to snatch the lead in the 83rd minute.
Kamil Jaser Amirul sent the Filipinos into ecstasy when he put the ball at the back of the net off an assist from Jaime Rosquillo.
The result means that the Filipinos finish third place in Group G with three points behind one win and two losses.
On the other hand, the Afghans finish fourth place with three points below the Filipinos due to an inferior head-to-head record against them.
