Overshadowed by Magnolia’s defeat to Ginebra in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup chapter of the Clasico Sunday night was the feat achieved by Calvin Abueva.
The ‘Beast’ has now become the 50th player in league history to tally 1,000 offensive rebounds, according to league stats chief Fidel Mangonon III.
The Hotshots forward was just three away from the milestone entering the rivalry encounter but ended up doubling so as he grabbed six.
He went on to collect nine rebounds, together with six points, two steals, and a block in a losing cause, 103-97 – their first after a 5-0 start into the tilt.
Abueva now has 1,003 offensive boards to his name.
Sunday’s affair was a contest of sorts between the two-time BPC and Japeth Aguilar as to who collects their 1,000th offensive rebound first.
Prior to the conference, both the Kapampangan stars had 987 each, and the Kings star was eight away heading into the Clasico duel.
But then, it was Abueva who won the race as the 6-foot-9 forward only hauled down half of what he needed to reach the milestone.
Surely, though, Aguilar would take the win more than anything else, as he played a pivotal role in the comeback with 13 points and six caroms.
Topping the all-time offensive rebounds list is the great Jerry Codinera (2,411).
