The Fireball lit it up in Hong Kong
Josh Urbiztondo proved to be the spark the Singapore Slingers needed Saturday night as the Philippine export set an ABL record for three-pointers made, making seven triples in the Slingers’ 92-76 Game One win against the Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions. The game took place in Southorn Stadium.
Urbiztondo, who is averaging 10.33 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.83 assists this season, started to feel it in the third frame, made his first triple a minute and four seconds into the game and followed it up with another one a minute later.
After going cold in the second frame, the 34-year-old caught fire in the third frame, draining three triple during that span to help the Slingers blow the game wide open.
With the Eastern Long Lions creeping in during the final frame, the 6-foot gunslinger drained back-to-back triples — his seventh coming with 8:34 left in the game to retain Singapore’s double-digit lead.
Urbiztondo finished the game with 25 markers on 8-for-16 shooting from the field and 7-for-14 from distance. Teammate Justin Howard set ABL Finals records for scoring and rebounding with 45 points and 28 rebounds.
The last time the San Francisco, California-born cager drained at least six triples was back in 2013 when he was still with the Air21 Express.
Game Two is set to be played on Tuesday, still in Hong Kong.
