In a landmark event for the Philippines’ sole professional volleyball league, the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Draft Lottery went as expected, setting the stage for a new era.
ZUS Coffee, previously known as Strong Group Athletics, emerged victorious in Monday night’s lottery at the TV5 Media Center, securing the coveted first overall pick.
The Thunderbelles, with the highest odds at 40-percent following a winless season in the All-Filipino Conference, celebrated their chance to reshape their roster.
“We’re very happy for ZUS Coffee because we have the first pick, which gives us a better chance to select the best fit for our team,” said Justine Dorog, speaking on behalf of Thunderbelles’ head coach Jerry Yee.
All eyes are on Thea Gagate, the standout 23-year-old middle blocker from La Salle, expected to be the top choice in this historic draft.
Gagate was pivotal in La Salle’s Season 85 triumph and in Alas Pilipinas’ recent AVC Challenge Cup bronze medal. She is confirmed as ZUS Coffee’s likely selection.
Novotel Ibis Styles will host the draft, supported by Gameville as the official outfitter.
The Thunderbelles will add Gagate to their roster alongside St. Benilde stars Cloanne Mondoñedo, Gayle Pascual, Jade Gentapa, and Michelle Gamit.
Capital1 secured the second pick after a challenging debut season, followed by Galeries Tower at third and Farm Fresh at fourth.
The draft order was determined by PVL MVPs Brooke Van Sickle (Petro Gazz), Sisi Rondina (Choco Mucho), and Ces Molina (Cignal), overseen by Commissioner Sherwin Malonzo and Games and Amusement Board representative Eliza Roman.
Nxled, Akari, Cignal, PLDT, Chery Tiggo, Petro Gazz, Choco Mucho, and defending champion Creamline complete the draft lineup.
All prospects will showcase their skills at the Gameville Ballpark combine from Tuesday and Wednesday, paving the way for decisions to be made at the upcoming draft on July 8 at Novotel Manila Araneta City.
