After helping the Cignal HD Spikers reach the finals of the Spikers’ Turf Season 2 Open Conference, utility spiker Ysay Marasigan could miss their championship series against Air Force because of his commitment to the Ateneo de Manila University.
The back-to-back UAAP champions Ateneo Blue Eagles will be representing the country in the ASEAN University Games (AUG) in Singapore.
The initial schedule of the Spikers’ Turf championship games are on July 4, 13, and 16, which will apparently coincide with the elimination round of the AUG on July 11-16, and its finals on the 17th.
Marasigan said he knew about this even before last season of the UAAP and has warned the coaching staff of the possible conflict.
“Before pa lang, sinabi ko na sa kanila na [sa Ateneo] ako sasama if ever conflict kasi before pa ‘ko mag-sign ng contract [with Cignal], [alam nang] magsi-Singapore ako,” said Marasigan. “That’s planned na last last year pa nu’ng nag-first championship kami [sa Ateneo].”
Marasigan said the team’s coaching staff is still iffy on his absence in the finals.
“Parang against sila na aalis ako, kasi nga championship, kaya sila na mismo ‘yung gumagawa ng paraan para maayos ‘yung sched. Magu-usap pa raw sila Sir [Richard] Palou, Sir Tony [Liao] and Coach Sherwin [Malonzo] about that,” he said.
The former SEA Games representative, however, believes the HD Spikers would still thrive without him.
“Buo pa naman ‘yung team [if ever wala ako]. Nanjan pa naman si Kuya Lansangan. Dalawa naman kaming utility e. Malalim naman ‘yung bench ng Cignal e, so kayang-kaya nila ‘yan,” said Marasigan.
